I just found the answer.  Good lord.  This has been one, long exercise in futility.  Win7 is great, but this was the most difficult connect to a printer in my windows life.

The trick, in summary: add the printer as if it were locally connected.  When it provides the list of printers to select, where your 6MP won t be listed, click on Windows Update.   It will update that list with the 6MP driver compatible with Win7 64.  Once you have the driver installed, re-run the install process for your networked 6MP.  Good to go.  Just printed my test page.   

I battled to get my HP Laserjet 6P to print on my new DELL machine with Windows 7, even after following tip from svenfjord:

I bought a refurb unit with duplex on eBay for under 100.  I saw some cheaper, and many more expensive, but this has a 90-day warranty, and the seller has excellent fedback.  It s for my home family use, so it won t get lots of use, but I d rather use a laserjet and save the color inkjet talk about expensive ink for color-only jobs.  I was going to toss the LJ6 on eBay, but my brother can use it at his office, so I m going to give it to him.

And yes, I m in the US, so thanks and have a nice Thanksgiving as well.

I solved my problem.and it appears as thought there are a LOT of folks with this problem between 6P printers and Win 7

and as I read thru it I picked out 2 simple fixes that I thought I would try out.

1 on page 2 it mentions, turning off bi-directional printing at the bottom of the printer properties/ports screen

2 on page 2, problem turned out to be that I was using LPT1 as a port instead of USB001 Virtual printer port for USB

Did these 2 operations, and suddenly I got my printer working with my Desktop Win7, 32 bit system.

Now I m going to try and get it to work with Laptop win7, 64 bit system.
